We offer walk-in advising Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 10:00 am - 12:00 pm and 2:00 - 4:00 pm. Please plan as far ahead as possible as heavy volumes may exist during peak periods.

Maria Rosado



As a child, Mari always dreamed of becoming an educator. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from FIU and a Master’s degree in Higher Education from Florida State University. As an alumna of FIU, Mari has a passion for giving back to the institution that gave her so much. She began her career at FIU as an academic advisor for the School of Education and Human Development in 2012 and is now the Director for Advising in the College of Arts, Sciences and Education. She is currently working on her Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration and loves cooking, video games, and spending time with her family.

Jacqueline Diaz

Associate Director


Jacqueline “Jacky” Diaz has worked in the educational field for 10 years and has been a part of the College of Arts, Sciences & Education at FIU since 2010. In her role as Associate Director, she oversees training, professional development and assists in supervision of professional academic advisors in our college. In addition, she supports the Dean with developing and implementing student success initiatives. Jacky earned her Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and English from the Florida State University, where she also earned a Master’s degree in English Education. She served as an English & Social Studies teacher for five years in Tallahassee, FL before transitioning to FIU. A Miami native, Jacky shares her home with her college sweetheart and her two boys.

Alina Dominguez

Sr. Academic Advisor & Project Lead
Biological Sciences

Image Alina has worked with the University for over ten years in various roles and has found a love for advising in the past five. She earned a BS degree in Biological Sciences and then a Master’s degree in International Business. Alina draws from her varied work experience covering multiple industries and educational background to add to her expertise. She currently works with the Department of Biological Sciences to guide students towards that next goal, whether it be getting into Grad School, Dental School, Medical School, or simply graduating from a major they love and working in the field. She also assists with the initiatives of the College’s Center for Academic Services. Whether it’s working on an online project, helping a student create a strategy to bounce back, or riling up a crowd of freshmen during orientation, Alina’s passion for FIU’s current and future students is clear.

Gisela Cabrera

Sr. Academic Advisor
Women's and Gender Studies / Liberal Studies/Interdisciplinary Studies

Image Originally from Cuba, after living in Puerto Rico for many years, Gisela became a Miami resident in 1973. Her employment experience includes working in the radio business and other educational institutions. She came to FIU in 1992 where she has worked in both campus life and admissions/registration. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at FIU, she began her academic advising career at the College of Arts, Sciences & Education's Center for Academic Services in 2007. In addition to her current student case load for interdisciplinary Studies, Liberal Studies and Women’s & Gender Studies, Gisela’s focus is helping outgoing Arts, Sciences & Education transient students as well as posting the College's foreign language requirement.

Christina Abdemalak

Sr. Academic & Pre-Law Advisor
Philosophy / English

Image Christina joined FIU as a freshman in 2003 and graduated with her Bachelor in Science in Health Sciences. Her original goal of pharmacy school changed in 2006 when she began to work with the university as a student assistant in Campus Life. She fell in love with her university even more and pursued a career in higher education. She found her place in the College of Arts, Sciences & Education where she has been an academic advisor since 2011. In her free time she enjoys binge watching shows on Netflix and traveling to new places.

Cristina Ugarte Whelan

Academic Advisor
Earth & Environment / Biological Sciences

Image Cristina is an academic advisor for both Biology and Earth and the Environment. She has experience as a field biologist and botanist in South Florida’s Everglades, Mexico and Costa Rica. Cristina holds both a MS (1997) and PhD (2004) in Biology from Florida International University. She has published articles focused on disturbance impacts to wetland plant communities, pigfrogs and American alligators. She currently enjoys helping students navigate the undergraduate programs at FIU in order to succeed and pursue future career goals.

Diana Cimedevilla

Office Specialist

Image Diana joined FIU in 2013 as a Senior Secretary for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. She joined the Center for Academic Services in September of 2015. Her many years of customer service experience with companies such as Eastern Airlines, and AT&T (former Southern Bell) make her an invaluable asset to our center, and students.

Andrea Guardado-Monrroy

Student Assistant

Image Andrea became a student at FIU in 2013 and joined the Center for Academic Services in 2015. She is currently a student assistant for the College of Arts, Sciences & Education. Andrea makes sure to help, and guide students whenever they need assistance. She is currently working on her bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, and after graduation will be pursuing her Medical degree.
